BIKITA-If well planned, Bikita residents and Masvingo Province are soon set to benefit from kimberlitic diamonds that have just been discovered in Ward 1 area under Chief Budzi in Bikita district, according to information obtained by The Mirror.

Bayrich Enterprises a Harare based mining company is already said to be making efforts to engage partners to fund the mining project which will cover 40 hectares of land.

The lands committee in Bikita is understood to have set on January 13 2012 to deliberate on issues that were going to affect the mining including the movement of people from Villages 1 and 2 whose people would be affected by the newest economic activity in the area.

District administrator, Edgar Seenza was reluctant to comment.

Sources said that Bayrich has already approached Enviro-Smart Consultancy, a company registered with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) to carry out consultation work in the district before the actual mining starts. The consultation involves requesting villagers, the local authority, politicians, traditional leadership and any other concerned person to air their views with regards to the project.

Sources also said Bayrich had earlier on engaged a Chinese firm, Angina which withdrew after sighting incapacity in mining the Kimberlyte diamonds. The Chinese machinery was only able to cope with alluvial diamond such as that mined at Chiadzwa. After the Chinese withdrawal, Bayrich is now approaching South African mining companies and hope is that a deal will soon be struck with a company from Kimberly mines.  By Garikai Mafirakureva
